A Brief History

In 1963, Edmonds began as a summer employment project for John Edmonds. Brother Roger joined John in March of 1965 to form the Edmonds Bros. partnership. In 1966 the enterprise was incorporated as Edmonds Bros. Enterprises Limited.

Through the late 60s and 70s, the operation diversified significantly to include expanded snow and ice control services, gasoline retailing and automotive repairs, retail garden centers, various residential and commercial rental properties, heavy trucking, a 100 acre farm for the production of sod and nursery stock, pre-cast concrete manufacturing and a commercial/residential fencing division. By 1978 the Company's combined operations employed more than 175 people with revenues approaching 6 million dollars and a market area including the Maritime Provinces and export of concrete products to Quebec and Ontario.

In 1979, owing to a too rapid expansion and diversification, the Company was re-organized, downsized, and re-incorporated as Edmonds Landscape and Construction Services Limited. We retained those parts of the business where our experience and expertise remained economically viable.

In 1989, Edmonds Environmental Services Division was formed as a research and development, advocacy and promotional arm for environmental, sustainable initiatives in the landscape industry. This marked a firm committment to development and implementation of pesticide-free, organic landscaping and lawncare.

The particular challenges of the 1980s and 90s have brought us today almost full circle: an enterprise combining landscape management and construction along with snow and ice control. It is a year round business in which we have almost 4 decades of experience and a team of well seasoned professionals.

Today, we employ approximately 50 full time workers depending on the season, and personnel reach 90 to 100 with seasonal hires during peak times in spring/summer and winter. We have two shop/yard locations, Halifax, and Dartmouth with our main office and reception located at 2675 Clifton Street in Halifax.

In 2000, HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality) approved a by-law to restrict cosmetic use of pesticides. We wholeheartedly agree with this movement towards pesticide reduction. Our employees take special pride in achieving results such as in the flower bed above, without the use of pesticides.
