Recognition

Our certificate of Recognition, issued April 16, 1997, renewed every year following an external audit verified by the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association, received a score of 92% in March of 2000.

We were very pleased to receive the following encouragement in letters from NSCSA representatives:

"Your company has made a tremendous investment in health and safety over the past few years. This investment does yield a definite long term payback, however it is frustrating when the buyer of a service rewards firms who do not play by the rules and pay the costs necessary for most legitimate businesses. ie: insurance, Workers Compensation and OH&S compliance. Most buyers today realize the tremendous risk and liability they face by not placing a priority on OH&S compliance."

"Very few companies receive such a high score. This is a strong indication that Edmonds has succeeded in developing a safety program that works"
Judy Bunston, Director of Audit

Due Diligence

When you hire someone to work on a property you own or manage, you "share the responsibility for the health and safety of persons at the workplace".

When considering your snow removal and ice control needs, you are obliged to use due diligence.
Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act

Ask yourself when you hire an individual or a company:
  • Does he/she/the company employee Safe Work Practices?
  • Does he/she/the company have proper training in First Aid, WHMIS, Safety Orientation, use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)?
  • Does he/she/the company operate in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all applicable Regulations
Ask the prospective contractor for...
  • Certificate of Recognition for Safety
  • Letter of Good Standing indicating that the above Certificate remains in good standing
  • Letter of Good Standing from the Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia
  • Certificate of Insurance confirming liability insurance coverage
  • Details of the company's Safety Policy/Program

Jim Benedict prepares for construction work.

The photo demonstrates compliance to several Safety requirements:
  • PPE - Steel-toed boots;
  • SWP - Two men loading heavy equipment;
  • SWP - Use of safety chains to doubly secure the trailer.
Inside each truck is a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, eye wash dispenser, hard hats (for applicable use), eye protection, and hearing protection. The supervisor must be first aid trained (at least one person per crew). Both men are WHMIS trained and have attended a Company Safety Orientation. They are trained in the use of fire extinguishers.

All this is the law, regardless of whatever other qualifications a worker has.

So Why choose Edmonds?
  • Certified through the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association, we have a corporate safety policy, corporate safety manual, and an active safety committee comprising management and field workers.
  • Health and safety policies meet, or exceed, existing legislative requirements.
  • A risk management department which oversees our operations is engaged in weekly inspections of all our vehicles and equipment, and periodic inspection of on site work crews.
  • Work crews are uniformed, and on site trained in safe and efficient work practices.
  • Vehicles are clean, clearly marked, and well equipped.
...our due diligence helps protect you, the general public, and the worker from accident and injury.
