Thinking Ahead

The best time for overseeding success and/or renovating your lawn is the period from early August to mid -September (depending on the extent of the work involved).

Changing from chemical to organic management of turf to meet the new ban on pesticides in metro:
The spring of 2003 marked the full implementation of the pesticide bylaw "designed to aid the overall community health and well being of the residents of Halifax Regional Municipality". All residential homes are prohibited from using pesticides without a permit from the city.
  • As summer approaches your lawn may need more attention. It is important to monitor turf growth to provide optimal mowing frequency, encouraging root growth, shading of weed species, and resistance to drought and pests.
  • Optimal Daily watering is essential for newly seeded or sodded turf areas. Morning is the best time, even if just before sunrise, while afternoon watering is also fine but more water is lost to evaporation. Late evening is not recommended as turf will remain wet all night, providing an ideal environment for fungus disease. Annual transplants require adequate drainage and moisture to thrive. The size and configuration of pots, planters, or garden beds does make a difference. Small containers require more attention as do areas in full sunlight.
  • This is a great time to assess your trees from a total landscape perspective. Removal of deadwood and selective pruning shows their full potential. An assessment followed by action will encourage better tree health. Hedges and some shrubs require pruning and shaping now. Edmonds has the personnel and safety standards to ensure the job is done properly, and from a total landscape perspective.

Safety and Risk Management

Poor ice and snow management in winter and pesticide use in summer are potentially litigious issues. It is no accident that our larger contracts include hospitals, recreational facilities and institutions where safety and risk considerations are paramount!

The size of our organization, the training and experience of our personnel, and our attention to due diligence ensure that properties are kept safe through the year.

Edmonds holds a Certificate of Recognition, issued jointly by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association.
